The Suzuki Method was founded by Japanese musician and pedagogue Dr. Shinichi Suzuki. Based on a philosophy of respect for the child, this method holds that talent is not innate or inherited and that the potential of every child is unlimited. Suzuki coined the expressions "talent education" and "mother-tongue method of learning" to describe his approach to teaching.
It is based on the "Mother Tongue Approach": All children learn to speak the native language of their environment. There is never any doubt that they will succeed.
The Suzuki Method aims to create a positive environment both at lessons and at home which will stimulate the child to want to play an instrument.
Dr. Suzuki believed that with this proper environment and education, and through the medium of music, we are creating for our children a better life and for us all a better world.
The Suzuki approach relies strongly on the cooperative relationship of teacher, parent and student. It is not only a teaching method, but more importantly, a philosophy, a technique and a global teaching approach.
You will be expected to:
A musical background is not necessary. Your teacher will show you how to assist your child easily at home.
Daily listening to appropriate recordings is an integral part of the Suzuki approach.
Children speak their mother tongue because they hear it from birth, and even before, if we consider that they hear it in utero. When our children are born, we start talking to them right away, even if they won't be speaking for several months. We never doubt their ability to learn to speak.
The Suzuki approach applies this natural way of learning to the study of music. Children and parents listen daily to recordings of the pieces the children will be learning. This allows the child and parent to integrate, among other things, the melody, rhythm, nuances, character and tempo of the pieces. By listening daily, children develop an awareness of the quality of sound they will seek in their own playing.
"Listening until we remember is not enough. We must listen until we cannot forget." - Shinichi Suzuki -
